Description
This is Elna and her twin at a wee age. This was shot late 1918 or early 1919. I think someone out there and maybe it is me should make a Historic Children website. This is because I studied how to teach Social Studies. I became very aware of the absence of the documentation and of first hand data on children. It is like they are absent from history. This is when I first became really interested in family history, as I found at least in our data, we had pictures of children. There was a time that a child up to the age of 2 was not even considered really alive yet, as there were so many infant deaths. Children were sent off with nursemaids till they turned 4. Having studied childhood, I am really interested in the family history which is in people's basements in the form of disorganized paper and photo clutter. Having sat and gone through it, I believe there is a whole lot of insight into history from these. It is even better if you can go to the owner of the data and ask them questions. Second to children's stories, the women in my line enjoyed telling stories and reviewing these data bits as memory joggers. Before scanning this image a couple days ago, I had never seen this image. I am a frequent student of the hairlines, cheeks, eye insets, and gestures of my family. When I saw this, I immediately recognized my grandma. I was pretty excited. These babies were virtually identical through life. I called one Grandma and one Auntie Grandma. I had a hard time distinguishing them. If one saw them frequently, something about their eyes was a titch different. My aunt who has lost her twin must be feeling lonely.
