Description
Elna Brodie Niccolls grew up around Nesbitt, then moved to the North Hill above Brandon, and then moved into Brandon. Her pasttime was drawing. I have restored her image which was drawing on a piece of cardboard and cut out with a scalpel. Then, I prepared her art in a format for printing. Elna and I talked about the modernization of pet care and the pet industry. In her days, the dog ate what the family ate. They would eat the scraps from the table. In Elna's life story, her mom would cut the skins off the potatoe with a knife and form perfect S's which she threw each time into the air and the dog would catch it and eat it. They would walk 4 miles into town. The dog would often go with the children when they went alone, but often she would be sent home because it was a bit far for the dog. The dog went with the family and would sit outside the general store where the children bought candy. The store had 2 doors. The family went in 1 door, did their purchases, forgot their dog, and went out the other door. (They may have had other business to do in town.) The poor dog sat there waiting for them while they walked all the way home. Elna's mom realized this and walked all the way back into town. She found Tricksey right there waiting for them in front of the store. She called the dog and then they went home.
