Artist's Description
Elna Brodie Niccolls grew up in Nesbitt, Manitoba, then on the North Hill above Brandon, and then in Brandon. She loved to draw. She is my grandmother. She is 92. I have pieced together the fragments of this paper, colorized it, and prepared it for print. Elna referred to her grandchildren as little lambs. Elna used her skills like this to create designs she would then embroider to make pillowcases, cushions, and so on. Elna was also a craft convenor in her church. She would dream up ideas of what women could make, make them as models, and then have groups of women make these little items (brooches, decorations, etc.) and then the community would host sales and use the money for church projects. She passed on a couple to me. Some of these were also embroidered pins - she gave me one to keep.

Donna L. Munro is the owner of PWL. She is a lover of family heritage and value, having focused her life strengths on studying Literature and Science for her younger life. She has found her roots and family meaning within Scottish and English culture. The start of the collection is focused on releasing family art to print. The first artist Donna has profiled is her great-great-grandfather James Wharton, who was one of the first of the family pioneers to settle in Manitoba just as its communities opened up for settlement. Unfortunately, James Wharton spent most of his time working to get a nicer home for his wife, and did not have time to return to art when he came to the prairies.
