Description
These were Margaret Wharton's adoptive parents. This is the sister to her real mom. The harshness of the prairies, a new mouth to feed seemed like too much for Margaret's parents. When she turned 2, they gave her to these relatives who lived 1 mile away. When Margaret was nearing 18, her adoptive parents decided they were returning to England. They died there. This image was shot in about 1883-1885. Look at this fellow's face. Can you see the young pub crawler in him? Where this fellow came from in England, pubs were close at hand. I see in this guy, at least when he was young, as a hard partier who loved to hang with the guys. Again, in this image, I see youth in his face. George was in the contruction trades and was a stone cutter or stone mason. This was useful in England where stone was a major resource for building houses. If you've built a house, you'll appreciate his work as those lovely columns which decorate just a few of our foreward housing faces of homes where I am. I would like to try this work. About George. He faced a grand slam when he came to Canada. The pubs were not accessible. He did go on occasion to town to have a drink with the boys, but if you stayed late at all, you could not go home that evening, just because it was implausible to travel at night. In England, you could just walk home late and stumble into bed because the pub was so handy. Aunt Mary Anne loved her husband. She would search for him on a horse arriving home the next day. One of these times, she and Margaret had a fright. They thought an Indian was approaching their land. Either way, for sure it was not George. When the visitor came closer, it was an RCMP. If it was the first time you saw an RCMP approaching, you might wonder who and what they were too. All things are not self-evident as you live them.
